Denison Child Care - Administration of Drugs Policies & Procedures

This policy ensures that Denison Child Care has established an approve procedure, allowing drugs to be appropriately administered. Staff are made aware of their responsibilities and children are safeguarded by receiving drugs according to an established routine.

POLICY

Denison Child Care will only administer prescription drugs to children, in accordance with provincial legislation this requires that:

1. Each prescription must be accompanied by written authorization from a parent (parent to fill out "Consent for Medication Form").

2. A parent must hand deliver the medication in the original container, clearly labelled with the child's name, name of drug, the dosage, the date of purchase and instructions for storage and administration of the drug.

3. The medication must be stored as directed and kept in a locked container.

4. Medication must be administered in a well lit area.

5. Whenever possible all children receiving medication should receive it at the same hour.

6. For each child receiving medication an entry must be made on the "Consent for Medication Form". Staff giving the medication must list each dose administered and the time. If a dose is omitted, reasons must be listed.

7. Any accidental administration of medication (e.g. medication to the wrong child or dose error) must be recorded to the Supervisor or designate, who must then notify a parent of the child.
